The King’s Command: A Royal Comedy for International Schools
The King’s Command: Professional Schools Tour
Bangkok | November 2026

Following its inaugural presentation at the National Theatre of Thailand in July 2026, the Siam Repertory Theatre Company will remount The King’s Command for a dedicated international-schools season this November.
Written in English by HM King Vajiravudh, Rama VI, at the age of twenty-one, The King’s Command is a sparkling comedy of duty, desire and mistaken identity—and one of the earliest works of modern Thai drama written in English.
Set in 18th-century Paris, the story follows a young nobleman who defies a royal command to marry, hides in the home of a quick-witted young woman and is swept into an escalating whirlwind of disguises, misunderstandings and comic chaos.
Performed entirely in English, the freshly adapted production lasts approximately 35 minutes and features live music, dance, period movement and ensemble comedy. Its compact format is designed to fit easily within the school timetable while giving students the experience of seeing a complete professional theatrical production.
The production offers connections across several curriculum areas:
- Drama and Performance - farce, ensemble comedy, physical storytelling, period movement and live stagecraft
- English Language and Literature - a classical English-language text made immediate and accessible in performance
- History and Global Perspectives - Siam, Britain and 18th-century France viewed through the work of a young Thai king
- Thai Cultural Heritage - an opportunity to encounter an important part of Thailand’s royal literary tradition onstage
Each school performance includes the complete production followed by a live Q&A with the company. Curriculum-linked workshops and additional educational activities can also be arranged.
The production can tour directly to a school theatre, auditorium or hall, with its set adapted to suit the available performance space. Schools may schedule one or two student performances during the school day, with the option of an additional ticketed performance for parents and the wider school community.
School performances are available on weekdays from 2–24 and 26–27 November 2026. Packages are tailored to each school’s timetable, audience numbers and auditorium capacity.
