The University of Buckingham's teacher training courses are amongst the most accessible and successful in England. Back in 2002 Professor Sir Chris Woodhead and Professor Anthony O'Hear led the first teacher training course to be offered at The University of Buckingham. There were just 12 teachers. Now, with over 1,300 teachers and school leaders studying with us, we have become one of the country's leading providers of teacher training and professional development. Our primary aim in all of our courses is to improve teaching and leadership in schools.
The frameworks and assessments for each course weave into your day-to-day school lives so that study and practice are relevant to your role and aspirations.
Our online teacher training programmes for international students include:
Initial Teacher Training
We offer two courses for teachers in international schools:
- International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) (with PGCE)
The iQTS programme is a 37-week school-based course offering teachers based in schools outside the UK who have not undergone a period of formal training the opportunity to participate in a structured programme of professional development leading to a teaching qualification
- PGCE for International Trainees
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education for International Trainees offers teachers based in schools outside the UK, who have not undergone a period of formal training, the opportunity to participate in a structured programme of professional development.
Postgraduate courses
- MEd Educational Leadership and Management (fully online)
This master’s programme is available online with support from your university tutor, including live online study days. It is for those seeking to gain a Level 7 qualification (this programme carries a credit value of 180 at Level 7) and wish to either progress or pursue a career in leadership within an education setting
- MA Education (fully online)
Our MA Education is a one-year, part-time course for teachers and school leaders to develop expertise in the field of education through critical evaluation of research and scholarship.
- MA Education (Evidence-based Practice) (fully online)
This course enables students to complete a master’s dissertation and to link this to the study of the way in which evidence-based practice has been integrated into education.
- MA Residential Education (fully online)
The MA Residential Education is a school-based online course for those working in or with an interest in boarding schools. It is offered in partnership with the Boarding Schools’ Association. We have students based all over the world undertaking this programme.
- Online MA Education (Teaching and Learning)
Led by world-famous experts in various fields of education, there are two routes to completing the MA Education (Teaching and Learning). It will take approximately three years to complete the full MA and 18 months to complete the top-up MA.
- MA Education (Leading Sport in Schools) (fully online)
This two-year online course is offered in conjunction with the Professional Association of Directors of Sport in Independent Schools (PADSIS) and carries 180 credits at Level 7.

- Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD)
The EdD programme at The University of Buckingham brings together an exciting international community to study and research together. Our Professional Doctorate in Education promotes and endorses the highest level of knowledge, skills and experiences of leaders in schools and education.
