The theme, “Thinking Outside the Box”, was echoed through more than 30 professional development workshops and keynote speeches. Khun Mechai Viravaidya, the first keynote speaker, captivated his audience by talking about how he and his teams have had to come up with innovative ideas to deal with social challenges such as promoting birth control, preventing the spread of AIDS, improving rural schooling and reducing poverty. Other speakers at the conference included Bambi Betts, the CEO for the Academy for International School Heads and a revered practitioner who has worked with over 100 international schools; Andy Hinds who is renowned for supported heads and senior teachers in improving the quality of learning for students; professional coach Clive Leach and Fran Paffard, who is a senior lecturer in Early Years at the University of Cumbria, UK.
Bangkok Patana students also played a big part in the conference, introducing keynote speakers and sessions as well as touring delegates around the campus. “The conference showcased ten very confident students across a number of age groups. They took complete leadership presenting in front of a very senior audience and being articulate and confident,” said Head of School Matt Mills.
Feedback from the conference has been good. “It was an amazing conference; you sounded all the right inspirational sirens, the motivational lights were ablaze, the calm organisation was impeccable, the engagement of the young people you serve was awesome…” said Gary Benfield, FOBISIA’s newly elected Chairman.
Tania Donoghue, FOBISIA Executive Officer said, “The highlight of the conference was the supply of high quality professional development for senior management combined with equally passionate educationally based organisations, which a common thread amongst all was empowering and giving the best to our students in Asia.”

Annual FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference 2014
“Thinking Outside the Box”
Bangkok Patana School, Bangkok, Thailand
Friday 7th November – Monday 10th November 2014
We are all excited to be hosting this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference in the Kingdom of Thailand. The country has recently experienced significant political upheaval as the country seeks major electoral reforms. As I write to you the country is being governed by the National Council for Peace and Order, however in many terms life goes on as normal for most Thais, expatriate workers and visitors. Can I guarantee this political situation is going to be resolved by November’s conference date? Absolutely not! But I can say to you that this has been going on for well over a year now and we have had minimal disruption to the school programme, with only one day’s closure during this time. So it is full steam ahead for this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference!
You will notice that this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference is following the FOBISIA Business Meeting format as we are holding all of the meetings at the host school. As Bangkok Patana School is one of the largest schools in Asia, we have the space and facilities to cater and support a large professional conference. As a school head, I also think it is important to keep the focus in schools rather than hotels, that don’t have the student learning heartbeat. Speaking of students, you will see lots of students at the conference, leading tours, introducing key notes, or just helping you get to your next So in conclusion, at this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference in Bangkok, things will be a little different as we share top quality professional development opportunities, meet colleagues over sumptuous meals, take in a free foot massage and be entertained by student performers whilst experiencing this year’s overarching Leadership Conference theme, ‘Thinking Outside the Box’.
